Now that Aragon is behind us, 60% of the MotoGP season has been completed. I already did a first check in on the state of statistics after Mugello but it’s time to do it again a handful of months and 5 rounds later.
I would have done in after the two rounds in Misano to have two thirds of the season gone but holidays await me so article now it is and then we’ll see each other again at the end of the season.
Note : The average positions for sprints & races results do not account for DNFs (they’re only averages of races completed).
qualifying

Q1/Q2 results

Qualifying position results
3 riders have always qualified directly to Q2 : Jorge Martin, Maverick Viñales and Pecco Bagnaia. They are the only riders who have always been in Q2 as everyone else who went to Q1 at least once also stayed there at least once.
Note : Last season, Jorge Martin was the only rider from the full time grid to never visit Q1. Dani Pedrosa also achieved that feat with his two wildcards in Jerez and Misano.
10 different riders have beaten the Q1 trial. So far, the best at the exercise have been Raul Fernandez and Pedro Acosta (4 times each). Pedro had to go to Q1 4 times in the last 5 rounds, he was successful at getting out 3 times.
Not accounting for penalties, 10 riders have gotten at least one front row start. Jorge Martin has the highest number with 8 front row starts (67%). His other results have been a P6, a P7 and two P4. Pecco Bagnaia is close behind with 7 front row starts, his worst qualifying position also being a P7.

6 different riders have managed to capture the pole this season. We are still missing two to equal the total number from 2023 (8).
It took Pecco Bagnaia until Assen to get his first and only pole of the season. In 2023, he had the most of all riders (7).

Two factories shared the 12 poles :
- Ducati with 9 of them (from 4 different riders),
- Aprilia with 3 of them (from 2 different riders).
Four polemen have managed to win both the sprint and the Sunday race : Maverick Viñales in COTA, Jorge Martin in Le Mans, Pecco Bagnaia in Assen and Marc Marquez in Aragon.
Jorge Martin is so far the only rider to have crashed after starting on pole (Mugello sprint and Sachsenring race). A stat highlighted last time is still standing : at every round so far, the poleman has managed to score at least one podium.
Besides Jorge’s DNFs, the worst result by a poleman is P6, achieved by Enea Bastianini in Portimao (sprint), Marc Marquez in Jerez (sprint) and Aleix Espargaro in Silverstone (race).
Jorge Martin has the most poles for now (5) and he has already beaten his score from 2023 (4).

After 12 rounds, this season has seen 6 different sprint winners : 4 from Ducati (Jorge Martin, Pecco Bagnaia, Enea Bastianini, Marc Marquez) and 2 from Aprilia (Maverick Viñales, Aleix Espargaro). All sprints have been won from the front row (7 times from pole, 58% of the time).
10 different riders have scored a sprint podium. The additions since Mugello have been Miguel Oliveira (getting P2 in Sachsenring) and Enea Bastianini (winning in Spielberg).
The repartition of the riders who have achieved a podium among factories is as follow :
- 4 riders from Ducati : Jorge Martin, Marc Marquez, Pecco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini;
- 3 riders from KTM : Brad Binder, Pedro Acosta and Dani Pedrosa (wildcard);
- 3 riders from Aprilia : Aleix Espargaro, Maverick Viñales and Miguel Oliveira.
Jorge Martin has won the most amount of sprints (5). He was on the podium 83% of the time (4 P2s in the last 5 rounds, 2 P3s early in the season, a P4 in Barcelona and a DNF in Mugello).
Pecco Bagnaia is close behind in terms of wins (3) but he only has 4 sprint podiums, which is less than Marc Marquez (6).

Considering all the podium places : 21 of them were occupied by a Ducati rider (58%), 9 by an Aprilia rider (25%) and 6 by a KTM rider (17%).
Jorge Martin only missed on points once, Enea Bastianini twice (in all cases, because of DNFs).
After Mugello, 4 riders haven’t scored a sprint point yet : Alex Rins, Johann Zarco, Luca Marini and Takaaki Nakagami. The situation hasn’t evolved.
After Mugello, we had 4 teams with double DNFs (Ducati and Aprilia in Jerez, Trackhouse in Barcelona, LCR in COTA), there hasn’t been any since. We even managed to have everyone crossing the finish line of the sprint in Sachsenring.

The 2024 season has seen 5 different race winners so far : 4 from Ducati (Pecco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez) and 1 from Aprilia (Maverick Viñales).
9 different riders have scored a Sunday race podium, and just like with the sprints, all from European factories. The repartition is as follows :
- 6 riders from Ducati : Pecco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, Enea Bastianini, Marc Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi and Alex Marquez,
- 2 riders from KTM : Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta,
- 1 rider from Aprilia : Maverick Viñales.
On Sundays, Pecco Bagnaia has been the most dominant rider, collecting 58% of wins (7 out of 12).
The only other rider to have won more than once on Sunday is Jorge Martin with 2 wins.

Pecco and Jorge are equal in terms of podiums with 9 each. Enea Bastianini follows with 6 and Marc Marquez with 5.
Considering all the podiums places : 31 of them were occupied by a Ducati rider (86%), 4 by a KTM rider and 1 by an Aprilia rider.
Pedro Acosta stepping on the podium in Aragon stopped a streak of 8 rounds with only Ducati bikes on the bike. That podium also happened to be the only one of the season with no factory riders.
Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder are the two riders who only missed on points once on Sunday, Enea because of his penalty in Barcelona and Brad because of his DNF in Silverstone.
Everyone on the grid has scored a point at least once.
In addition to the 2 teams double DNFs we already found in the first third of the season (Pramac in Jerez and LCR in COTA), Trackhouse had a double DNFs in Silverstone.
teammates battles
Every rider has beaten their teammate at least once (including races where one rider DNFed and his teammate finished the race).
Qualifying wise, 2 riders have always done better than their teammate: Jorge Martin (Pramac) and Pedro Acosta (GasGas).
You can find the detailed results in the gallery right under (grey means one rider from the team wasn’t qualifying/competing, red means both DNFed).

others
Only 3 riders have sustained an injury that caused them to miss races : Aleix Espargaro (Assen sprint and both races in Sachsenring), Alex Rins (both races in Sachsenring and both races in Silverstone) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (both races in Spielberg).
At most, two riders from the grid were missing for a race (both races in Sachsenring, we still had 22 starters because Remy Gardner and Stefan Bradl were there).
Two riders have finished all the sprints and they’re both riding a KTM : Jack Miller and Pedro Acosta. Enea Bastianini is the only rider to have always crossed the finish line on Sunday.
The highest number of DNFs is currently held by Joan Mir (8), then we have Johann Zarco and Pecco Bagnaia (both at 6, both with 4 during sprints and 2 on Sundays).
After Mugello, the highest number of DNFs (9) and consequent fewest number of finishers (16) happened during the sprint in Jerez. Those numbers haven’t been beaten yet.
If I have to compare the first and the (almost full) second third of the season, I think the Ducati domination is even more blatant and I worry that the last part of the season might be of the same nature. One thing that is for sure, the battle for the title will last for long.
See you all at the end of the season for the final all around look.
